Oh boy. Here we go. It looks like that Sony in now in the bandwagon of launching titles with an "Online Pass" feature. If you've bought games like Mortal Kombat and several EA games, then you'd be familiar with this scheme. The online pass is essentially a one-time use code that unlocks the online multiplayer functions of the game. In effect, second-hand buyers will have to purchase another online pass for a fee. Sony's version of the scheme is PSN Pass, and guess what game they will be launching it with - Resistance 3.
In a report from Eurogamer, Sony has confirmed the implementation of the "PSN Pass" feature. Thus, second-hand purchasers of Resistance 3 will have to purchase the pass separately if they wish to play its online features. No details yet were released as to how much the pass will cost separately.
Now with more and more publishers getting into the bandwagon, and now with Sony on the list, the future of the second hand games market looks grim. I buy second hand games too, and personally, I call this way too much of a stretch of making a buck on the side of the publishers.
