News: Anonymous Denies Involvement in PSN Information Theft

In a letter issued to The Guardian, a daily British newspaper, hacktivist group Anonymous denies involvement in the recent PSN user account information theft. This is a response to their implication in the attack, as stated in the letter of Kaz Hirai to the U.S. Congress. (See earlier post)

Though unofficial, Anonymous was implicated in the attack, as investigations conducted by Sony on SOE servers resulted to the discovery of a file named "Anonymous" with the words "We Are Legion". In response, Anonymous claims that they had nothing to do with the incident; that they never engaged in stealing credit card information; and that their 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft.

They further debunk Sony's yet unofficial allegations by stating that the modus operandi of the credit card theft runs contrary to that of Anonymous, and its intentions. They also mentioned that upon further investigation of the case, Anonymous will not be proven liable. To view to full statement, click here.

Last month, the group Anonymous was responsible for the denial of service attacks on PSN as a show of support for George Hotz, who earlier released security keys for the PS3, which cracked open the PS3 to various unauthorized software. The group later withdrew its attacks, since they did not want to severely affect Sony customers.
