News: Nintendo 3DS Price Drop Breakdown

Are you an early buyer? Disappointed? Good news for everyone who have not yet picked up one? We break it all down to you. From the announcement, more announcements, up to the latest announcement. Read on :p

Early morning of July 28, 2011 , Nintendo of America announced that the suggested retail price of 3DS which was $249.99 would drop to $169.99 (That is a very huge drop if you ask me). 3DS was released March 27, 2011 and after 5 months it came to this.

Nintendo stated at the press conference: "For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games."

So pretty much this was all marketing strategy by Nintendo. It's a big gamble at their part and we'll see how this turns out.

Fear not early buyers, Nintendo makes it up by giving away free games to download at the eShop and here's how it works:

Owners will have to connect to the Nintendo eShop (internet/wireless broadband required) at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11. Connecting will automatically register you in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program (Yeah, That's what they call it. It feels political now). The program contains two elements:

1.) Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES Virtual Console games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public on September 1, 2011. These includes:

  • Super Mario Bros
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Balloon Fight
  • Ice Climber
  • The Legend of Zelda

2.) Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games on the end of 2011. These includes:

  • Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3
  • Mario Kart: Super Circuit
  • Metroid Fusion
  • WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Another news reported was from Bloomberg Japan stating that 3DS will lose money on each unit sold.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said that the move was made with the intention of increasing revenues and profits in the future, despite the temporary setback.
