E3 2011: Mircosoft Presscon Highlights

Back to reality. E3 is over and so is the sh*tload of announcements and awesome games that were unveiled in this huge event. Microsoft was first to deliver the presscon and it sure was packed with cool announcements, including tons of Kinect enabled games, and its new Xbox Live TV. If you’ve missed the presscon, check out some of the highlights of the Microsoft Presscon!

  • Show starts off with a lengthy demo of Modern Warfare 3 featuring an underwater sequence and a boat scene. Robert Bowling of Infinity Ward and Glenn Schoefield of Sledgehammer Games announces that as usual, add-ons for the game will come first on the Xbox 360.
  • Crystal Dynamics also shows off a demo for their upcoming Tomb Raider game, featuring some new game mechanics focusing on survival, and guiding Lara to overcome precarious situations.
  • EA Sports’ Peter Moore announces that upcoming titles Tiger Woods: PGA Tour, Madden NFL, FIFA and an unannounced title will be Kinect enabled, as well as other non-EA Sports titles such as Sims and Family Game Night 4.
  • Bioware announces that Mass Effect 3 will also be Kinect enabled, utilizing voice recognition for dialogue selection and issuing squad orders. Shepard’s new melee attack draws wows from the audience.
  • Ubisoft talks about how Kinect will be utilized in their game. After showing off a trailer for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, they demonstrate Kinect’s use in the game through the gunsmith feature. Through gunsmith, players will be able to customize their guns through hand gestures, voice, and even test them on the go. Ubisoft also announces that all future Tom Clancy games will be Kinect enabled.
  • Xbox Live TV is formally announced, with the aim of providing more content to their customers. With it comes the new dashboard, and its Kinect enabled navigation, as well as Youtube, Bing and UFC.
  • Cliff Blezinski of Epic Games, and Ice-T demos Gears of War 3, featuring a boss fight with the Leviathan.
  • Crytek announces Kinect battler game Ryse.
  • Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary will come November 15, 2011, featuring a fully remastered campaign of Halo Combat Evolved, co-op play over Xbox Live, and classic multiplayer maps.
  • Turn 10 studios shows off their trailer for Forza Motorsport 4. It will be Kinect enabled featuring head tracking, and voice recognition. It will also feature 16 player multiplayer and monthly expansions, and will hit store shelves October 11th.
  • Peter Molyneux introduces Fable: The Journey. It seems to be an on-rails shooter controlled via Kinect.
  • Minecraft will be coming to the Xbox 360 this coming winter and will be Kinect compatible.
  • Kinect Disneyland Adventures will be coming to the Xbox 360 and Kinect this Holiday season, bringing a new way to enjoy and relive the famed Disneyland.
  • Kinect Star Wars is formally announced, and a demo was played on stage. Underwhelming though due to the input lag, and boring fight scenes.
  • Double Fine demos Sesame Street Once Upon a Monster, which will utilize Kinect’s gesture recognition to tell the story. The game will hit store shelves this fall exclusively to the Xbox 360.
  • Kinect Fun labs is announced, featuring a collection of developer and user created content which takes the Kinect’s capabilities to inventive new ways such as People Scan, Object Capture and Finger Tracking.
  • Kinect Sports Season 2’s trailer was shown and will feature new sports games including golf, football and more.
  • Dance Central 2 was demoed, and will now feature simultaneous 2-player dance.
  • As Don Mattrick wraps up the show, the beginning of a new Halo trilogy was announced, and a trailer for Halo 4 was shown, set for release Holiday season 2012.
Microsoft seems to be taking the Xbox on a different direction to widen their customer base, considering their drive for more Kinect games, and their shift to entertainment with the announcement of Xbox Live TV. Overall, this year’s E3 presscon for Microsoft seems to be a bit low in the wow factor for me, especially because of the lack of innovative use of the Kinect for some of the games, but it’s still definitely worth the wait for their awesome lineup of titles.

Oh, if you want to watch the Microsoft Presscon, here's the full coverage from Gamespot.
